Do you know what all of these photos have in common? All of them feature some of my favorite clothing items that I have worn time and time again. As I have said numerous times on my blog, I have strived for creating a more minimalist wardrobe for a few years now and even though I have still so much to learn, I think that I am on the right path. If you don’t know what a capsule wardrobe is, well, this basically means that all of the pieces in your collection are timeless and classic pieces that could be mixed and matched in different ways to create a new outfit every time. I am planning on sharing more on my path to creating the perfect capsule wardrobe, so stay tuned for more posts on the subject soon.
Today, however, I wanted to start with dedicating a full blog post to the five key items in my wardrobe that I consider as “essential” in building a more classic and timeless capsule wardrobe. If you are planning on converting your wardrobe to a more minimalist clothing collection, these five items will be the perfect start for you.
Crisp white T-shirt (or another neutral color)
Personally, I consider the crisp white T-shirt the most important essential item in my closet because it can be worn year round, no matter what the weather is like. It can be hard to find high quality tees that won’t break the bank and won’t pill, shrink, or do that annoying thing when the sleeves curl under! I have had some basic T-shirts from H&M, LC Waikiki, and Zara but nothing so far has lasted more than one season. So I am really looking for a brand that sells good quality basic T-shirts – let me know in the comments if you know any.
Comfortable flats
I couldn’t get by without my flats collection. For me, they’re an absolute must both for my city walks but also when I’m traveling because they’re comfortable and they don’t take up a lot of room in my luggage. They can be easily combined with jeans, trousers, skirts, and dresses and are just the perfect on-the-go shoe that are chic no matter what!
Cozy cardigan
I’m the kind of woman that refuses to give up on my cardigans, even when it’s hot outside, because I love wearing them that much! There’s something about an oversized cardigan that instantly gives any outfit an effortless yet sophisticated vibe.
Classic trench coat
This may not be an ideal piece for everyone’s closet, but for me, a trench coat is as classic as outerwear gets. I wear mine all the time as a regular coat, not just when it’s raining. I think it’s also a great piece to include if you’re traveling abroad and you’re looking for a lightweight coat that won’t take up a lot of room in your suitcase.
Floral dress
Floral dresses are one of the most versatile pieces in my closet. Any clothing that can be worn to the office AND on the weekend AND for an occasion (like a wedding for example) is a win. Over the years I have started to prefer more classic silhouettes, dresses that cinch the waist and make the whole look so elegant and feminist.
